Upgrading an ageing fire alarm system can involve significant cabling work, labour costs and disruption to the building’s occupants. For contractors working in schools, care homes, hotels and other occupied premises, these challenges can make an upgrade difficult to plan and deliver.
C-TEC’s FastConvert offers a practical way to move from a conventional fire alarm system to a CAST addressable system while retaining suitable existing zone wiring. By reducing the need for replacement cabling, it can help installers deliver a more capable system with less disruption and lower installation costs.

FastConvert is a zone conversion interface developed by C-TEC to simplify the upgrade of conventional fire alarm systems to its CAST addressable technology.
It allows installers to reuse suitable existing zone circuits when replacing the conventional panel, devices and bases with compatible CAST addressable equipment. This gives building owners access to the benefits of an addressable system while making use of cabling that still has a useful service life.
Its application extends beyond existing C-TEC installations. According to C-TEC, FastConvert can support upgrades from a wide range of conventional systems, including many two-wire and bi-wire systems, subject to the suitability of the installation.
Conventional fire alarm systems remain suitable for many smaller premises with straightforward requirements. They identify the zone in which an alarm has been activated, helping those responsible for the building establish where to investigate.
An addressable system provides more detailed information by identifying the individual device reporting an alarm. This can be particularly useful in larger buildings with numerous rooms, floors or occupied areas.
Depending on the equipment and system design, an addressable installation can offer:
More precise alarm information: Identify the device that has activated, helping staff investigate the relevant location.
Flexible alarm responses: Configure cause and effect arrangements to control how different parts of the system respond.
More options for detection: Use compatible devices with features designed to help reduce unwanted alarms.
Improved access to system information: Connect compatible equipment to software that supports remote monitoring, servicing and reporting.
For premises with more complex requirements, these capabilities can make an addressable system a valuable upgrade.
Replacing fire alarm cabling can be one of the most demanding parts of a refurbishment project, particularly where access is restricted or the building needs to remain in use.
By retaining suitable existing zone wiring, FastConvert can reduce the amount of cabling work required. This can help lower labour and material costs while limiting disruption to staff, residents, pupils and visitors.
C-TEC reports that one customer achieved a saving of almost 40% on a system conversion through reduced cabling requirements and time savings. The saving on any project will depend on the existing installation and the scope of the upgrade.
FastConvert is supplied as a four-zone, loop-powered interface and can be expanded to eight zones using C-TEC’s extender board. It is compatible with C-TEC’s XFP CAST and ZFP CAST addressable fire panels, together with CAST and CAST-PRO devices.
During an upgrade, the conventional devices and bases are replaced with compatible addressable equipment. FastConvert connects the retained zone circuits to the new CAST system, maintaining circuit integrity without requiring each existing zone circuit to be extended into a loop. No end-of-line devices are required on the converted zone circuits.
Multiple FastConvert interfaces can also be incorporated into larger installations, subject to the panel capacity and overall system design. This makes the solution relevant to projects ranging from smaller refurbishments to more extensive upgrades.
Moving to a CAST addressable system also gives installers access to C-TEC’s wider range of compatible products and system features.
CAST uses soft addressing, allowing devices to be addressed automatically through the panel or individually using C-TEC’s handheld programmer. This provides installers with a choice of commissioning methods to suit the project.
Compatible systems can also connect to ENVISION, C-TEC’s cloud-based software for remote access, servicing and site management. This provides access to system activity and reports from smartphones or computers, helping maintenance teams stay informed across the sites they manage.
The range also includes CAST-PRO combined fire detection and alarm devices. Where a building’s emergency procedures call for additional messaging, suitably configured CAST systems can support lockdown alerts and voice announcements using compatible equipment.
The ability to reuse wiring is central to FastConvert’s appeal, but the existing installation must be assessed before an upgrade is specified.
Cabling should be inspected and tested to confirm that it is suitable for the proposed system. C-TEC can provide guidance to installers on the checks required.
Where the wiring can be retained, there is also a practical environmental benefit: less replacement cable is needed, and less material is removed and discarded during the work.
For contractors looking to modernise a conventional fire alarm installation, C-TEC FastConvert offers a way to introduce addressable technology while reducing the amount of cabling work involved.
